Four-time champion takes home accolade with 14 best laps
The awards just keep on coming for Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK), and the 2018 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Champion ends 2018 taking home the Pirelli Best Lap award after recording the most fastest laps in a race this season.
Contested throughout the 13 rounds and after the events on Saturday in Qatar, only 25 races this season, there have been five riders setting fastest laps in the race throughout 2018. Awarded one point per lap, Rea took the award with 14 points, nine ahead of Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) in second.
With a steady start to the season, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) secured the first fastest lap of the season Down Under in Australia, with Melandri securing it in Race two. But it didn’t take long for Rea to get on top, taking the fastest lap alongside his first win of the season in Thailand. Melandri continued to prove to be a strong competition in The Netherlands, but from Imola onwards is when Rea’s charge took off.
The Northern Irishman secured the best lap in every race but three from Imola through to Qatar, despite winning 14 of the 17. Joining Rea in the standings are Melandri, Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), Sykes and Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team).
